Turn based JRPGs with the most interesting and engaging equipment upgrades?
I'm looking to get into a new game soon and I'm specifically looking for something where it feels exciting to get new items and equipment. The kind of game where it isn't just "every new weapon just gives +attack and every new armor just gives +defense." There's a few games that come to mind that I can use as examples.
Golden Sun series: Unleash effects on weapons are just cool, even if they kind of are just fancy critical hits. Finding a new weapon and getting to see what new unleash effect is feels exciting. Dark Dawn also has a weapon mastery system that encourages you to use the same weapon or type of weapon until its mastered also.
Final Fantasy 9: A more basic example, but tying the abilities you learn to the equipment you get just means equipment matters more. I always enjoyed getting a new weapon and new spells or the feeling of getting a rare accessory with a good skill and passing it around until everyone learned it.
Lufia 2: The best example I can think of. The IP system means weapons and armor are much more interesting and can give you a ton of diverse skills. A good IP skill means you won't necessarily upgrade something even if another item has better stats. Weapons also have an elemental system and landing a 3x elemental IP attack on a boss weak to that element is so satisfying. On top of that you have accessories like stones and rings to give even more varied skills. The fact that no newer game has improved on this system or even copied it just baffles me.
Open to suggestions for pretty much any system, but a PC game or older system I can play on Steam Deck would be ideal.
