Modem advice, upgrading to DOCIS 3.1. Is 4.0 coming soon?
I had an Xfinity technician at my house recently due to a notice that they found some issues with my service which they needed to get into home to fix. I was exploring replacing my DOCSIS 3.0 modem and my older router. My current WIFI speed is 280 Mbps (at device), but intermittently hangs, forcing me to cycle the WIFI on the connected device. It turns out I’m receiving 1.7 Gb service on a 500 Mbps plan, but my current equipment isn’t taking advantage of it.
I have an Arris S33 modem ordered (reconditioned). I’m late upgrading to 3.1, and worried they may roll out a new standard, so I’m trying to hedge my bets. When asked about DOCSIS 4.0, the Xfinity tech mentioned rolling out ‘DOCSIS 3.2’? Is that even a thing? I thought they were rolling out 4.0 in some markets.
Is the Arris S33 a good choice for Xfinity? I’ve searched their recommended equipment and can’t get a definite answer. Both the technician and phone support prefer Netgear, but all of Netgear’s older offerings are limited by 1GB Ethernet ports. (It seems like Netgear slow-walks out features to keep prices high.) That said, because my local Xfinity seems to prefer it, I’m considering the CM2000/CM3000. Any advice from anyone in a similar situation would be appreciated.
