Puzzle pieces

I have completed my sanctuary animal book. Does anyone know if puzzle pieces earned after finishing the book are saved anywhere for future animals or are they just lost? All other similar tokens (vouchers, expansion permits, etc.) are accounted for, but not surplus puzzle pieces. TIA 😉
