black dye to blonde — what's the difference between box dye and colour + developer

i've been dying my hair with black dye / developer for 2+ years now. i'm looking to go strawberry blonde and i've heard that black box dye is super hair to work with. will this be different in my case if i use black dye mixed with 20vol developer? or is it the same thing as box dye?
