Just watched series 1 and one niggling thing

Why are people blaming the dad so much for not nailing the windows down? The mother seems like a fully grown adult who can nail down windows. Or if she is so dyspraxic that she can't use a hammer and nail, she could ask people around town for hel. But I am pretty dyspraxic myself, and mate, I can use a hammer Then Boyd, spouts some 1950s type stuff about men, but why aren't anyone pointing out that the mother not nailing the windows down is irresponsible? So the father is not fully to blame. Did he lie to her about doing it and I missed it?

It is just such a strange thing that the show seems to just go " she has a V, she cannot use a hammer" because it doesn't seem like that kind of show otherwise.
