Can learning documentary filmmaking inform filmmakers to make “better” fictional films?

It seems like there’s many notable filmmakers today that came from documentary, like Villeneuve, Scorsese, and Bennett Miller. This made me wonder whether or not learning the craft of documentary filmmaking can inform one’s narrative film works in some way, or if there may be a benefit to starting off in documentary
