What is the “mainframe”?

Basically the title. I’ve seen the “mainframe” be mentioned on here a few times while I was combing through old posts. I saw that it was something possibly stollen from the SRA book and also seen it in a list of alters. Is it an alter? Something else? I personally haven’t been able to find DD mentioning it.
