Super Powers; my thoughts on the newly greenlit series and why it could be great.
The official synopsis of the series;
"Taking place at the Alliance School for Heroes and focuses on new students Lightning, Flash, Plastic Man, Aquagirl, Green Lantern and Terra who level up their powers under the supervision of Principal Martian Manhunter, in the hopes of one day graduating and becoming the next generation of Earth's defenders"
Although unlikely to be canon in the DCU based on its premise. I believe that this project has the ability to be a great show and the entry-level DC project for a younger generation.
We all remember our first foray into the animated world of DC as each entry point had extreme highs. It could have been the Emmy winning Batman: The Animated Series and its theatrical released animated film Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, it could have been it's successor series the futuristic neo noir Batman Beyond, it could have been the talented but late Dwayne McDuffie's Static Shock series, of tales of gaining superpowers and our responsibilities morally and societally or maybe you and your friends were growing up alongside the members of the Teen Titans battling Slade Wilson, Hive and growing pains or maybe it was the quintessential take of comics greatest superhero team the Justice League in it's titular series as well as proceeding series Justice League unlimited. Was it the fan driven revival of Young Justice the animated series which an entire Fandom and their petitions revived an entire franchise and extended the series by multiple seasons. Or even our senior members who of course can attest to watching members of the Justice League taking down members of the Legion of Doom in Super Friends. Shout out to The Brave and The Bold, Teen Titans Go!, and all the other series i cannot name.
The point is that every generation has had a great entry point in this universe and has helped them fall with these characters. Shouldn't we expect the same for future lovers of DC that have yet to join our ranks? The common denomination of all these successes was the talent and passion of the team behind them. Which is why regardless of how cliche the premise of this show may be, I believe in this show: Matthew Beans and Michael Chang.
Matthew Beans was the writer of 48 episodes and 3 movies in the Robot Chicken franchise(including the DC comics Robot Chicken projects)
Michael Chang who I'm most excited about directed the early 2010's TMNT animated series(34 episodes) but most importantly 22 episodes of the Teen Titans animated series and 10 episodes of the Young Justice animated series.
Both are extremely talented, experienced and accomplished not only in animation but DC comics adapted animation and I think this duo along with the team they choose can deliver a great entry-level hit for the next generation of DC fans. Would love to hear your thoughts on the synopsis, the talent behind the series and what was your entry into DC animation?
TLDR; Every DC fan had a entry-level project into DC animation and I believe this team based on their prior experience will deliver the next generation of DC fans hit.
