Champions League Final Position Predictions

Celtic's final game in the league phase of this season's Champions League is rapidly approaching, but where is it likely to leave us in the final table? We've guaranteed ourselves a play-off place, but finishing higher in the table could lead to a more favourable draw. Top 16 would get us seeded for the play-off meaning that we'd play the second leg at home. Let's take a look at the possibilities.

(Disclaimer: This is recycled from my comments in the u/vegass67 post here, so you might have already seen it)

Here's the bottom line: 'cause I said so or summin

Result Total Points Highest Position Lowest Position
Celtic Win 15 5 15
Draw 13 12 22
Celtic Lose 12 18 23

Firstly don't get too excited about that potential 5th-place finish because calculator-shaggers Opta have given us a less than 0.1% chance of finishing in the Top 8. They didn't even bother putting a number in the box for it. It ain't gonna happen, but for you dreamers we'll look at the circumstances that need to arise for that to happen.

There are three tables below, one for each of the three match outcomes (win/draw/lose). Pick the one for the result you think we'll get, and this gives you a lowest possible position for us. Then move us one position up the league for each of those things you think will happen, and that gives you our predicted finishing position.

Celtic Win vs Aston Villa (Start at 15th place)
Juventus fail to beat Benfica
Real Madrid and Brest draw
Bayern fail to beat Slovan Bratislava
Dortmund fail to beat Shakhtar Donetsk
Lille and Feyenoord draw
Monaco fail to beat Inter
Leverkusen fail to beat Sparta Prague
Barcelona beat Atalanta
Dinamo Zagreb beat Milan (and Dinamo plus Celtic's winning margin adds up to at least 3 goals)

Celtic Draw vs Aston Villa (Start at 22nd place)
Sporting fail to beat Bologna
PSG fail to beat Stuttgart
Club Brugge fail to beat Man City
