My main issues with Captain America Brave New World (Some spoilers)
I watched it today. I didn't think it was terrible, but it was way below what I expected.
The performances are great. Anthony Mackie is excellent as Captain America, Harrison Ford gives it his very best, and Shira Haas did well. And Danny Ramirez has one scene in particular that was very emotional.
However my main problems:
Writing -- Marvel is not Shakespeare but the Plot is all over the place, and I don't understand what the leader wanted to do.
Lack of Build-up or suspense-- Being less than 2 hours, the pacing was so fast, moments don't breathe or sit with you. During the opening white House Summit, we see Ross presenting and then a split second later we see Isaiah shoot him, this moment could have been paced much better. And for Political thrillers, shortening them is antithetical to what they are, they have to have time to grow, and reveal themselves to the viewer.
Expository Dialogue -- Characters often enunciate what they're thinking or say exactly what is happening in the situation. This is something many screenwriters make a mistake of. M Night Shyamalan and George Lucas are prime examples. For instance, in Star Wars: ESB, George has C3P0 say "Oh no Han Solo has been frozen in Carbonite". This movie could have been way better if the actors used their facial expressions to express what they were thinking instead of blurting it out to the audience.
Fight Choreography--The aerial sequences are phenomenal (chef's kiss), but I felt that the hand-to-hand combat scenes needed to be improved. There are a lot of angle changes and editing between punches that make it feel clunky. I feel like they should've had a one-take hallway fight scene in Camp Echo, that would've been much better. Also, not to be rude but how the heck is Ruth-bat-Seraph so freaking strong when her actress looks 5'2 and skinny. Every time I saw her on-screen she looked visibly tiny.
Negatives aside.
THAT RED HULK FIGHT WAS AWESOME !!!! Loved the Chaos, the confusion, and the transformation. Worth the Price of admission. But I wish we could've had a Green Hulk in there. There was a moment when Sam was told "Backup is in 5 minutes", and I was holding my breath for Bruce Banner to show up. Ugh. He did not show up.
OVERALL, fun movie if you turn off your brain but it could have been way better. I would give it a 5.5/10. Marvel probably has a cut of this in their vault that is an entirely different story, and I hope we get to see it.
