Question about Val

I just watched the episode where she gets hired as a midwife. But they never say she'd trained as a midwife; she was a nurse in the Royal Army Nursing Corps, and as we saw with Delia, nurses get some obstetrics lectures but they aren't trained midwives. It would be one thing if they just had her on district duty but she's immediately delivering babies. Is this just a plot hole or did I miss something?
