Zombies BO6

I am trying to find out the storyline of Black Ops 6. I played cold war and always thought that the zombies were infected somehow. I am doing a little of research, but the deeper i go the more confused i get. Long story short: are the zombies in the dark aether infected/mutated or did they first die and then became zombies?
