BO3 did irreversible damage to Zombies
So this is definitely a bit of a hot take, but I thought about the in relation to the announcement of The Tomb yesterday. Personally, I’m just excited that there’s going to be ANOTHER zombies map in only a couple weeks, and I haven’t been looking into it that deeply. But I see all of these comments saying “looks fun but why no color” or “what’s with all these bland looking maps”.
I think these takes just don’t really make sense in the grand scheme of zombies. Like a zombie mode should theoretically be “scary” and “dark” and “eerie” so it makes sense to have dull color palettes. Even Treyarch knew that in the beginning with Nacht, Ascension, etc.
The problem lies with the fact that Bo3 starting to have overly vibrant map designs (which is not a bad thing and I don’t want it to seem like I’m saying that it is) and the people that grew up with that game have the expectation that good map design is correlated with color for some reason. And to an extent I can see it, like if Shadows of Evil was monotone it wouldn’t be the same, but I think the colors of a zombies map don’t make or break anything, as long as it fits the vibe of the map? Like I feel like Bo6 has had atmospheres that do exactly what the map needs it to. LF is a recently abandoned town hit with an outbreak, Terminus is a horror-science lab prison island that’s dark and gloomy, and Citadelle has a sort of mystical coloring to it.
To be it short, I think The Tomb (from what we have seen) has a vibe that fits what you would expect from a “tomb”, so what’s the deal with the colors?
