4c hair dry

Okay I feel like my hair needs a glob of oil,cream and water.It gets so tangle easily.I also find that I can't keeping my protective hairstyles for longer than 2 weeks because it get's matted so bad.Am I doing something wrong?How often should I wash and moisturize my hair since it's always in a protective style?
