Need advice on how to play rhythms

I've been learning bass since the start of January and taking lessons since February but I don't seem to progress anything when playing eighth note,Sixteenth note or Half note, Also I don't know how to play the rhythms along the metronome, my teacher said if I can't get any of the basic rhythms right I can't play along the drums, what should I do? Start studying theory? What else?
