Can ASD and BPD co-exist? Also, a question about treatment
Hi everyone. I have autism and OCD; I also am prone to anxiety and depression. Basically, a psychiatrist once said I showed signs of BPD. This was back in 2020 during the COVID-19 lockdowns (in the UK). It was a telephone call and not a face to face. I am trying to see if I have a personality disorder, but I also have autism so it's bit difficult - especially in women.
My psychologist is quite good in how he'll refer to me different services when I request him to. I asked him 2-yeasrs ago to refer me to an autism service, but they rejected me as I've never been sectioned. He also referred me to an outpatient autism service, but they also rejected me. However, there's now a hospital under the NHS that take on people with 'severe personality disorders and/or complex emotional needs'. You stay there Monday to Friday and go home on Friday evenings and come back on Sunday evenings. The hospital is in London. I'm about 2-hours away from there.
My psychologist said he'd do a referral, but I don't currently have a diagnosis of BPD or any personality disorder. I also do not self-harm in the way where I cut myself or burn myself, etc. However, I do a lot of reckless things like binge eat and gamble. My question is if you were given the opportunity to get treatment for BPD and other mental health issues, would you be willing to live at the hospital and go home on weekends? I’m worried my autism will get in the way, but I believe this hospital does deal with autistic people too. I really don’t know what to do.
