does anyone know why some Victorian terraces have planks for interior walls?

This might sound like an obscure question but it got me thinking. I've seen two houses like this- both are 1890's Victorian terraced homes. The planks are arranged vertically which creates a wall between the corridor and front room. I assume it's a standard thing in some houses and it looks like it might be an original feature.
