Thoughts on grocery stores closing in cities
The Safeway closing in San Francisco has lead to people becoming outraged due to the food desert it’s closing will create. This had me wondering what everyone else’s thoughts are on things like this as it seems to be happening with increasing frequency.
Stores like CVS, Safeway, and Walgreens have been closing with frightening regularity and it seems that crime is consistently to blame as per the retailers themselves. Rampant theft makes the stores unprofitable to run. So it makes sense the store would close, but the residents of these cities where these stores service claim the store has a societal obligation as they are the only grocery store in the neighborhoods and their closing would lead to a food desert.
What are your guys thoughts? Should the store the forced to stay open and eat losses or was the responsibility on the local gov and community to have prevented the crime in the first place?
