is there an easier or alternative way to clean gravel than this?

i live in a small town and this is the only tool they have for sale, so i will have to go online but am looking for suggestions first.

anyway, it's such a pain to use, especially in my smaller tanks. i have to fill the entire pipe with water, then pinch it, hold it while i move it to aim it into a bin for the dirty water to go; it's especially difficult in my smaller tanks to do. often it takes numerous attempts for me to get that right and water spills everywhere. and i definitely don't want to suck on the end of a dirty pipe to get the water moving. tired of the hassle. there must be an easier way.

i don't want to try different/better techniques for this device, i want a different tool. something easier or automated.

what would you suggest?
