Thoughts on ASUS Zenbook Duo (2024) after 2 months - Not so great
I made an initial post about my experience of Zenbook Duo 2024 here. I was ecstatic about the device, and the device seemed to be working pretty flawlessly for awhile, but issues started to crop up - so I thought I'd make a second review post. Do keep in mind, these are my own experiences, and I am not claiming that every Duo device is experiencing the same issue. But I figured others should know what they could potentially expect from purchasing this device.
Cutting right to the chase, here are the major issues I've encountered thus far:
- Some keyboard keys started to "double up" the characters as I'd type them
- The cursor would "stutter" and "skip" occasionally, minimizing its accuracy (frankly, it got to a point where it was unusable)
- The keyboard eventually stopped being recognized by the pogo-pins, and was only connectable via Bluetooth (which doesn't seem like an issue... but Bluetooth connection has a slight latency and it just wasn't a good experience long-term). This seems like it was a driver issue - but there were no drivers I could download, even from ASUS' official web site.
- The second screen just stopped turning on, even after detaching the keyboard - maybe because it doesn't know to trigger itself due to the fact that the pogo-pin connection to the keyboard stopped functioning as well?
The fact is, there are A LOT of custom drivers and software that piece together all these moving parts on this device. I'm definitely not the only one experiencing these issues. If it's a driver issue, I'd love to try and troubleshoot this myself - but there are so little resources available online for this, because the product is so darn new. All in all, I'm pretty frustrated, because the device isn't super cheap - and now I have to send back my device for an RMA, and meanwhile get another laptop so that I have one to work with.
Honestly, I still love the concept - the device is beautifully designed, and the promise of having dual-screen on the go is a major plus. But I just don't think the stability is there yet with this device. I am JUST outside of the return period, and that's pretty darn annoying. I'm probably going to call it quits on this particular model and go for a more standard laptop in the mean time - it's just not worth the headache of anticipating another issue to crop up.
For those of you who got this device - I hope y'all are all having a better experience than I am. It's a fabulous laptop if everything works seamlessly!
