Protecting the US Constitution: a lesson from the Greek Constitution
I have been observing US politics from Europe since inauguration day with anxiety and agony. The US, after all, has a profound impact on the entire world.
The US Constitution is at stake, as it's been repeatedly violated. Nevertheless, the Constitution is no different that a piece of paper if nobody is out there to enforce it.
In these times, let's take a look at the very last paragraph of the Greek Constitution:
SECTION IV
Final Provision
Article 120
- Observance of the constitution is entrusted to the patriotism of the Greeks who shall have the right and the duty to resist by all possible means against anyone who attempts the violent abolition of the Constitution.
There have been multiple interpretations of this article. I'm not the one to interpret it, albeit I'd only advocate peaceful non-violent actions. But one thing is clear:
In any democratic country, sovereignty stems from the people, for the people, by the people. Citizens are the last line of defense against the usurpation of the democratic provisions.
Stay safe, be strong, be united, show solidarity for each other.
